Hazqiyal ibn Budhi, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon Him, was one of the Prophets sent to guide the tribes of Bani Israil. He was sent to a village called “Dawardan” which was said to be located in present-day Wasit. The villagers of Dawardan had become immoral and were doing many bad deeds. So, Allah sent down a deadly plague which killed some of them. The Israilites fled from the village to avoid death from the plague.
The residents of Dawardan eventually reached a valley in the wilderness, where it appeared calm and cooling. So, they rested there and built civilization there. However, Allah sent down two angels to them. Both angels screamed once, and the people died instantly. Not a single one survived. Their bodies were later moved to a flat space, where they were buried in proper graves. Over time, their bodies rotted and they were just mere skeletons in their graves.
Prophet Hazqiyal passed by this cemetery on one of his travels. He asked Allah to revive the deceased of the cemetery. So, Allah told him to say, “Oh rotted bones! Allah has commanded you to come together.” At once, the skeletons rose out of their graves. Then Allah told Hazqiyal to say, “Oh skeletons, Allah commands you to be covered with flesh, nerves and skin!” The skeletons instantly became covered with skin and flesh. And this was all happening while Prophet Hazqiyal was watching! He was amazed.
Finally, Allah commanded Hazqiyal to say, “Oh souls! Allah wants you to return to the bodies you used to inhabit!” The people all came to life instantly. They looked around, puzzled. They were very grateful to Allah for bringing them back to life. So they said, “All praise is due to You, Allah, may You be Exalted! There is no deity worthy of worship, except for You!”
The residents of Dawardan had learned their lesson, and after the incident they moved back to their old village. Peace was restored, and the residents became strong believers in Allah. As for Prophet Hazqiyal, he passed away a few years later. The incident of the dead being revived was in fact, a miracle from Allah.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal reported about an authentic Hadith; It was said that a plague had broken out in Syria, and Abdul Rahman ibn 'Awf spoke about the plague. He quoted the words of Allah's Messenger ﷺ, saying: “If it (the plague) breaks out in a land that you are in, do not leave that land to escape from it. If you hear about it in a land, do not enter it.”
